Employer Active Prospects
Role: Mental Health Support
23 Feb 2022
Fred aged 23 was referred to Epsom & Ewell Hub back in Feb 2022. His main request for support was about receiving help with effective job searching and updating his CV. He had graduated with a BSc in Genetics and since graduating Fred had shared with Hub Staff that he was struggling to find what next step to take in his career.
Fred was unsure whether he wanted to continue developing a career to become a geneticist via a masters & PhD since he had identified struggling with high anxiety over the last years of the degree and recently testing for an ADHD disorder. Nuria talked through his challenges and doubts during 1-2-1 employment coaching and confidence building sessions while helping him with his goals such completing and amending his CV and researching resources for finding alternative pathways with his degree. In the meantime, Fred had been volunteering as an Active Listener on the online mental health support website ‘7 Cups of Tea’ and acquired valuable experience by volunteering at the ‘QEF’ Charity shop.
Fred eventually found that a Genomic counselling pathway through the NHS Scientist Training Programme would be a very appealing pathway to him due his interest in mental health, counselling and supporting others through Genetics/and his own lived experience. Nuria helped identify what care type
roles would appeal to him the most and still count for the Genomic counselling entry requirements. Fred identified social prescribing & MH support work roles and with support from Hub staff, started to fill applications, tailor his CV and write cover letters, while discussing possible confidence challenges and doubts and practice possible interview scenarios. In December and after filling in an application for a full time MH support worker role in Ashtead with the Active Prospects organisation, he was invited for an interview and successfully pass it with an offer of employment. Currently Fred is completing all the paperwork to start his training and pass his DBS checks with a view to start the role at the end of January. We will continue to stay in touch with the view to sustain employment and explore any possible challenges to ensure he is able to pursue his Genomic Counselling Training goal in a year’s time.
