Mathew – Employer Care homes UK, Miner House: Part-time Kitchen Porter
20 Jan 2022
Mathew was referred to us by the Epsom refugee network in April 2022. He left Syria and spent two years in Egypt before coming to the UK. He had been in the UK for three years and he did not speak English when he arrived. He was 19 years old at the time we started working with him, and he attends Kingston College studying for GCSEs. Apart from general support, Claudia and I use our teaching backgrounds and support him with his studies. Last year he gained a grade 4 in citizenship and narrowly missed a grade 4 in physics GCSEs. This year he is retaking physics and taking chemistry, biology, English and business GCSEs.
Since we started working together, his ambition, commitment and drive shine through. His English has improved which allows him to access the exam questions much more easily. His science and maths knowledge is good, and it is often his English that is a barrier to answering the questions. He is always pushing for the next level and his future goal is to become a nurse.
He recently started working part time in a care home, mainly preparing and serving food. He likes to earn his own money and puts in two or three long shifts per week. He manages this alongside his studies which shows his enthusiasm to make the most of his time and the opportunities he finds.
